A Cornish holiday company has taken the next step in providing carbon-neutral holidays, by installing two electric car charge points.
The Olde House in Chapel Amble, North Cornwall, now offer guests the chance to charge their electric cars for free from the power generated by their 1008 solar panels.
The new initiative builds on the Hawkey family’s commitment to responsible tourism which has seen them convert to solar energy to power their 30 self-catering cottages, swimming pool and farm buildings.
Andrew Hawkey from The Olde House said: “It typically takes a minimum of four hours for an electric car to charge, so it is ideal for owners to power their cars whilst they stay in one of our traditional cottages.
“It is important to us that we do all we can to be energy efficient; all our electricity is generated by our solar panels and with the addition of these new charge points, we are looking into electric-powered vehicles for our staff to use around our farm.”
The Olde House’s new charging points are available for guests to use, with a four hour charge enough to power an electric car for 100 miles.
Donated to them by environmental charity Zero Carbon World, they are one of the first in Cornwall to provide charging stations which are solar powered.
As part of their mission to live in a sustainable society, Zero Carbon World are donating 1000 charge points to tourism businesses across the UK, with the aim of creating a global network of charging stations. There are currently 13 Cornish holiday providers offering their charge points.
As well as using renewable energy The Olde House has also adopted a number of environmental measures on the farm including taking part in the Higher Level Stewardship scheme, creating a farm trail, opening a permissive footpath and increasing the habitat for rare birds.
Guests can enjoy a holiday on the 550 acre working farm, comfortable in the knowledge that they are reducing their carbon footprint.
