Polo on the Beach nominated for national Travel Award

The UK’s longest-running beach polo event has been shortlisted for a national Travel Marketing Award.

Veuve Clicquot Polo on the Beach, hosted and run by Watergate Bay Hotel on the north Cornwall coast, has been nominated in the ‘Experiential Marketing’ category.

Organised by the Chartered Institute of Marketing’s Travel Industry Group (CIMTIG), The Travel Marketing Awards recognises leading agencies and companies at the forefront of the travel sector.

Last year’s edition of Veuve Clicquot Polo on the Beach was held over a weekend for the first time – 18th and 19th May 2013 – with more polo, spectacular equine displays, live music and a Veuve Clicquot Champagne bar open on the beach throughout both days.

Judi Blakeburn, Operations Director for Watergate Bay Hotel said: “After six great years we wanted to evolve the 2013 edition of Polo on the Beach and bring more people to the bay. We moved the event from September to May and expanded it to a weekend long format.

“Our in-house marketing and events teams worked with Barefoot Media to develop a highly effective cross-media campaign which reached an audience of over 50 million people and saw over 8,000 spectators come to Watergate Bay for the event.”

Judged by some of the leading professionals in the travel, creative and marketing industries, the prestigious awards ceremony will take place at London’s Grosvenor House hotel on 20 March 2014.

Watergate Bay Hotel partnered with a group of Cornish businesses to deliver the marketing campaign, including digital marketing and PR agency Barefoot Media, video production company Pixel Rain, photographer Kirstin Prisk, and polo expert Andy Burgess from South West Polo.

The event was a pleasure to work on and it is great to see the marketing campaign shortlisted alongside some of the biggest brands and agencies in the travel industry.”

Last autumn Watergate Bay Hotel and Barefoot Media scooped two gold awards at the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR) South West England Pride Awards for their integrated marketing campaign for the event.

The 2014 edition of Veuve Clicquot Polo on the Beach will take place on the weekend of Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 July.
