The final details have been announced for the eighth Veuve Clicquot Polo on the Beach on the Beach on Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 July.
Free to attend, Veuve Clicquot Polo on the Beach is a unique event where surf meets turf on the sands of Watergate Bay, north Cornwall. Now in it’s eighth year, the event attracts thousands of spectators who come to enjoy a weekend of top class polo, entertainment and great food and drink.
The weekend will feature more polo than previous years with two matches on Saturday 5 and one on Sunday 6 July. A star line up of players including England international Jamie Le Hardy and Tim Vaux will be competing for the coveted Watergate Bay Trophy on Saturday 5.
Amy Guy, a former Miss Wales and TV Gladiator will be captaining one of the teams in the first match on Saturday 5 July. Amy said: “It’s great to see an all-ladies match coming to Polo on the Beach.
“More and more women are starting to take up the game as there aren’t many other sports where women and men get to play on a level field. To be honest I think the women are a bit more aggressive than the men and certainly more vocal.”
There will be more entertainment on the beach than ever before. Alongside polo demonstrations and Segway taster sessions, there’ll be a horse display team from Stampede Stunt Company on Saturday and a relay challenge on Sunday.
Headline sponsor Veuve Clicquot will be bringing their Airstream Champagne bar to Watergate Bay, complete with up and coming DJ duo ‘Billon’ who will be playing on Saturday night.
The Veuve Clicquot Airstream will be touring the UK from May to September attending keys events in the Veuve Clicquot calendar including Goodwood Festival of Speed and Festival No. 6. The Airstream bar will be open on both days from 12pm serving chilled Champagne alongside a delicious menu from The Beach Hut barbecue.
Polo on the Beach will also provide the debut for Britain’s first ever Segway polo match in the arena on Sunday 6 July. A team from Cornwall Segway will face a team of professional polo players.
Steve Farnell from Cornwall Segway said: “The players are going to have all of the polo skills, and we’re going to have the Segway skills, so it should make for quite an even competition. Segway polo is in its infancy but growing rapidly because Segways are so well suited to the game. You can turn 360 degrees on the spot and corner at speed.
“We’re also going to be running Segway taster sessions on the beach. People will be able to have some basic training and try their hand at a few obstacles.”
Organisers are committed to keeping Polo on the Beach free to attend and have been working with Crowdfunder to raise funds to help pay for this unique community event. Donors can pledge their support in return for limited edition polo goodies and experiences at: crowdfunder.co.uk/polo-on-the-beach.
